With Ted Simon and Elspeth Beard

Overland Expo West is a phenomenal event for anyone who is even remotely interested in travel with their own vehicle. It happens every year just outside Flagstaff in Arizona at a superb, tree-lined venue.

This year there were 450+ classes, seminars, demos, activities, slideshows, and films; totalling 570+ session-hours of instruction, 150 presenters, instructors, and VIPs, 365 exhibitors, and over 15,000 people onsite over the weekend. Something very special!

I was lucky enough to be book signing alongside of the one and only Ted Simon. Well into his eighties Ted is still absolutely enthralling readers and audiences with tales of the road and the thought processes behind long distance travel.

On the other side of me was newcomer, Elspeth Beard. ‘Newcomer’ isn’t perhaps the right word to be using, as her recently released and decidedly excellent book Lone Rider, tells the story of her journey around the world in the 1980s. Elspeth was the first British woman to ride around the world, and this is one rugged ride! If you’ve not read her book yet then may I suggest…

This was my third year at Expo West where I was engaged to do two on stage multimedia presentations and to instruct seven other classes or round table discussion groups. It’s an absolute ball of an environment to be involved with. The smiles, the fascination and the enthusiasm are quite addictive! I very much hope to be back again. See you at Overland Expo West 2019 perhaps.

A final thought. The book that I’m holding in my hand is the recently released ‘Hit the Road Jac’ by Jacqui Furneaux. 7 fantastic years around the world on a Royal Enfield. This is a book full of surprises!
