The Moment Collectors ASIA by Sam Manicom and Friends

“The Moment Collectors ASIA is a great collection of real stories about real bikers. There’s something refreshing about travel writing that doesn’t polish the edges or romanticize the journey into something unrecognizable. These are twenty tales from twenty travelers, each one grounded in the grit and spontaneity of life on two wheels across the most diverse continent on earth.
What Sam has assembled here isn’t a guidebook or a highlight reel. It’s a mosaic of human experience: the unexpected kindnesses, the mechanical failures, the border crossings that went sideways, the meals shared with strangers who became friends. You finish the book feeling like you’ve sat around a campfire with twenty people who’ve actually lived something worth telling.”
Aaron, USA

“Just finished reading Sam’s collection of Asia travel tales. What a riveting group of accounts. All different in flavour, but the common threads of each trip are indeed a great affirmation of the true nature displayed by the vast majority of natives of Asia to motorcycle travellers. I even paused my reading to consume another book, so that the delights of Sam and his travelling friends collection wasn’t over too soon! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it should be on the shelf of everyone who has travelled beyond our own shore on a PTW. I’ve been taken on some great adventures with each writer – such engaging “wordsmithing” Thank you all.”

“For anyone who has ever dreamed about riding a two-wheeled steed past the mountains of the Himalayas, the rice paddies of the Mekong Delta, past colorful bustling food stalls along the banks of the Ganges, or through steppes where the armies of the Mongols once held sway, this book is for you. An anthology of 20 vignettes from both seasoned and comparatively newer riders, each tale is a snapshot of a different part of the continent, some highlighting the personal struggles and adventure inherent in challenging nature and terrain (Siberia anyone??), others the joy and wonder of discovery and cross-cultural connection with locals. Indeed, many of the selections have elements of both. Bravo to Sam and all of the contributors for a thoroughly enjoyable read, which by the end, may have planted a seed or two for future two-wheeled travels of my own across that fascinating and complex continent.”

“The book is superb! Continuing the high standard set by your previous publications.”

“G’day Sam hope your well & hope this finds you, I’ve been reading your book The Moment Collectors ASIA & I must say what a tremendous read. To be honest I’m not a big book reader as I quite often drift off in my thoughts & go, what did I just read? But this book was amazing. I got so engrossed in it I had trouble putting it down at times. So well thought out stories of motorcycle explorers & their journeys & I could vision them on the journey riding along the ups & downs of the trip just like being there.
The stories also were giving you a history lesson along the way also & makes you want to head over there & explore these places. Credit to the riders who obviously were challenged on their rides at times through these untamed places by motorcycle, to explore & see what the rest of the world is like. Great book highly recommend to read it even if you aren’t a motorcycle enthusiast. This book is more than just for motorcyclists, it’s an expedition into the unknown”
Ritchie, Australia

“An excellent book written from the individuals hearts and what a tale they tell. I couldn’t put it down until each chapter was finished, but then I struggled not to start the next adventure if my eyes were heavy.”
Ian, UK

“Overall the writing resonated more with me than the first TMC. Feels more raw/honest/fresh. I liked that the German still sounded German in translation, you could almost “read it with an accent” which made it real. I enjoyed every chapter, except for one.”
Anja, USA

“The illustrations are stupendously delightful, and I think that this The Moment Collectors volume might be better than the first.”
Luisa, USA

“Covering a range of different countries, different bikes and different travelling styles, this book has something for everyone.”
Heather, UK

“A wonderful read for people who enjoy motorcycle adventures, people who are thinking about motorcycle adventures, and even people who do not ride motorcycles yet enjoy travelers’ tales, this collection will stimulate the vicarious vagabond within. Based in Asia, this second volume of “The Moment Collectors” is enjoyable even if you have not yet read the first. Each contributor describes an exclusive journey embracing their “aha!” moments, lessons learned, gifts of self-realization, and gratitude for the privileges of traveling. The smooth layout design and the wonderfully illustrative drawings create the look and feel of a collectable hardcover disguised as a paperback, a remarkable feat. I highly recommend it!”
Lu, USA

“The beauty of reading a book like this is the twenty chapter format. When one is travelling and being pushed a bit, they do not have time to indulge in a large book so this allows one to stop get a beer, a wine or a good cuppa tea and relax while enjoying a great moment discovering another travelers trip. In a small way it ignites ones mind to recapture those special moments in their own adventures.”
Mike, Canada

“As a fan of the first “Moment Collectors” book, I was excited to get my hands on a copy of this book. It certainly didn’t disappoint. As with the first, it takes the reader on a well-curated journey around Asia through freezing Himalayan passes and into the chaos of Iranian cities with many other locations beyond. Hospitality, courage, challenge and connection are consistent themes that run through this book. As someone who loves the “selection box” concept of this book, the great treat was in choosing where I wanted to go each night for my bedtime read and who with. I was completely transported at the hands of these different, talented writers from around the world. A real joy!”
Khalid, UK

“A compelling read, full with witty anecdotes and great humanity. Sam never fails to produce an absolute page turner and this is on a par with his best. This collection of very human perspectives on those they have encountered and the lives they’ve touched is by far and away the best I’ve read in a long time.”

“This book has only good stories, and great stories.”
Dave, USA

“An interesting and informative read. Short stories of the courage and endurance required to ride a motorbike in Asia. The things than can happen and the things to avoid. I was interested in the difference between these accounts of travellers who are goal orientated and battle through the odds to meet their targets and the more process orientated that make the serendipity of travel the reward. In the first category I particularly enjoyed ‘The White Deserts of Chukotka’ by Anatoly Chernyavskiy and in the second ‘The Light in Me Recognises the Light in You’ by Leigh Wilkins. Though every story is woth reading. Well done Sam Manicom.”
Duncan, UK

“This is a truly wonderful book. I loved the variety of voices, some from familiar names, others from first-time writers I hope will pick up the pen again. The collection is skilfully curated, which must have been no easy task given how well each author’s individual voice has been preserved. It would have been tempting to over-edit for polish, but that would’ve stripped away the nuances, the character, and the feeling that we were travelling alongside them. Their authenticity leaps off the page. Thank you, Sam, for giving these stories a place to be heard..”
Louisa, UK

“The usual high standard from Sam and his contributors. These people are the real deal. Great writing, openness and honesty, an insight into parts of the world only seen by a few.”
Biquer, UK

“Great read. Good to get to see some travel writers I haven’t read yet.”
David, Canada

“Having read Sam’s four other books first, which I couldn’t put down. Reading this book next seemed to be a no brainer. The twenty short stories kept me reading and wanting more from each writer. I now have a very long list of books to read. I think this books format would appeal to anyone who is interested in over landing on two wheels. With so many authors to bond with. Keep up the good work Sam.”
Colin, UK

“A superb anthology of motorcycle travel stories, The Moment Collectors ASIA will inspire anyone thinking of exploring our most diverse continent. Highly recommended.”

This next one came in an email letting me know that the reader had just posted this on Amazon. As you’ll imagine, we are delighted.

“For those of you who enjoyed the original “The Moment Collectors” book two years ago, here is another fantastic book I am sure you will love. And for those of you who haven’t yet read that original book, then I can highly recommend two great books for you. This one, and it’s predecessor.

For “The Moment Collectors – Asia” is another great anthology collection of twenty different tales. All pulled together by the highly experienced traveller himself, Sam Manicom. Each story is told by a different author. So you can dip in and out of the book on which ever chapter you fancy next. And whilst these authors are a unique and diverse set of individuals, they all share much in common. Their love of motorcycles, travel, adventure, and seeing and experiencing different countries and cultures. As such this great read is suitable for anyone who has, like myself, toured themselves. As I’m sure you will enjoy the stories, whilst smiling at your own memories which these tales will no doubt re-kindle of your own travels and experiences.

For those of you planning a trip, these stories will, I’m sure, enthuse you in developing your plans, and perhaps even make you change those about a bit, to allow you to take in some of the learnings and insights offered here. Finally, for those of you who are unable to travel for health, financial or other commitments, then I’m sure you will equally enjoy this great book. As you will get to read about, and feel that you experienced, aspects of the incredible world we all live in, and what great adventures are available in it in general, and in Asia in particular.

And if you are stuck on your Christmas present list, can I suggest you either ask a friend to buy you this book; or buy one or two copies yourself, and pop them in the stockings of loved ones. Problem solved! And I’m sure you won’t regret that.

Then all you will have to do is sit back and decide where you want to visit first. Nepal or India? Myanmar (Burma) or Siberia? Or any of the other great locations referenced in the book.”
